Compared with traditional lighting technology, LED street lights have higher efficiency and longer service life. Therefore, it has become the preferred type of light bulb in order to reduce the energy consumption of indoor/outdoor lighting and obtain energy-saving effects.
In fact, for street lights, higher efficiency and longer life are indispensable to reduce costs. Switching power supplies designed for powering LED lights must also have high efficiency and durability to ensure that they have the same long maintenance-free service life as LED lights. Here, resonant converters are one of the most popular power supply topologies, because compared to previous power supply topologies, their performance brings higher power efficiency and can reduce EMI. Soft switching is an important feature of resonant converters. However, the use of body diodes in resonant converters can sometimes cause system failures. The charge stored in the parasitic diode must be completely removed to avoid large current and voltage surges, including high dv/dt and high di/dt in the topological structure. Therefore, the key parameters of the power MOSFET, such as Qrr and reverse recovery dv/dt, will directly affect the dynamic performance of the resonant converter. This article will discuss the overall solution of switching power supply for LED street lighting. The new resonant controller combined with the new power switch can provide an efficient solution for the LED lighting power supply without affecting the durability and cost efficiency of the converter.
